How To Start A Career In Sales

So you want to start a career in sales?

Whether you knew from day one that you loved sales and want to kick-start your career, or you want to have a career change, don't panic! Usually the How To is the most confusing part of ones career journey but we have some tips and tricks into kick-starting your sales career.

  1. Be prepared to accept an entry-level role: Usually, the best place to start in sales, is as a Business Development Representative, this will give you the foundation into sales and help you develop those transferrable skills into strong sales techniques. Starting as a BDR will also enable you to learn the product, sales methodology, get additional training and support.

  2. Be Intentional: Look up the different sales positions and think about which you would like to pursue. Whether it's commission based only positions, base-pay sales, outside sales, inside-sales, do your research and see which resonates with you.

  3. Be Proactive: Now that you have identified which kind of sales role is for you, be proactive after spending years working for major tech companies I have been the most impressed with candidates who have taken a sales course, listened to a podcast, read articles, and even reached out to current reps at the company to find out what the role entails and have them sharpen their skills before the interview process.

  4. Highlight your transferable skills: Whether you are a recent grad or someone looking to change careers, think about what you have done so far that could be transferrable when starting your new career path and highlight this during your interviews. E.G. it could be that you are an athlete and are very competitive (great sales trait to have) or maybe you raised money for a charity in a specific amount of time (organisational skills), or perhaps you are a great problem-solver, all of these are great traits that can pave way to a successful sales career.

  5. Be Persistent and Resilient: Lastly, don't give up. You will get a lot of no's but for every no you are one step closer to a yes. Keep applying and keep interviewing you will find that as each interview goes by, you will get better and better and showcasing your passion and transferable skills for a successful sales career.
